Knock, Co. Mayo

The village of Knock is very famous because it has developed as one of Europe's major Catholic Marian shrines, because of an Apparition there on 21 August 1879. It was reported that the Virgin Mary, together with St Joseph and St John the Evangelist, appeared to local people. About 15 people, of different ages, were reported to have seen this apparition. The village of Knock was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1979 to commemorate the centenary of the apparition and by Mother Theresa in 1993.
